Produce CSA
Coon Rock Farm is now accepting applications for its Winter 08/09 Produce CSA. The winter CSA subscription fee is $360 and includes 20 weeks of produce over a 25 week period starting in early October and running through March.
Each delivery week you will receive a box containing 3 to 5 items with a value of approximately $18. Depending on the weather some weeks may have more and others less, but in the end you are guaranteed to receive a full $360 worth of winter produce.
A typical winter CSA box will contain:
lettuce for eating raw (mesclun, arugula, etc.)
greens for cooking (collards, kale, etc.),
root crop (turnip, carrot, sweet potatoes, etc)
headed crop (cabbage, kohlrabi, etc).
A winter CSA is very different from a summer CSA and also very difficult to do. We are one of only a very few local farms that offer one. The biggest difference is weather. Some weeks are just too cold or wet or both to pick and deliver. That's why we describe this CSA as 20 weeks of deliveries over a 25 week period. You will receive an email at the beginning of each week letting you know if there will be a delivery that week and what the contents of that week's box is expected to be.
This winter we are planting over an acre of fall and winter crops. We use various season extension techniques including floating row covers, unheated high tunnel greenhouses, and root cellar storage to bring you a full range of produce during the winter months. We may also source some items from other local, organic farms to make up any shortages in our own crops.
Here is a list of what should be available this fall and winter:
Lettuces (many varieties throughout the season), mesclun lettuce mix, braising greens mix, cabbage, bok choy, kale, mizuna, tatsoi, broccoli, broccoli rabe (rapini), brussel sprouts, cauliflower, kohlrabi, turnip greens, collards, spinach, mustard, arugula, Swiss chard, carrots, beets, turnips, parsnips, rutabaga, radish, winter squash, sweet potatoes.
There are several pick-up locations for your CSA box: Sat from 10:00 till noon on the farm in Hillsborough, Tuesday from 4:00 till 6:00 at Duke Gardens in Durham, and Thursday from 5:00 till 7:00 at Zely & Ritz Restaurant in Raleigh, and Saturday from 8:00 till noon at the South Estes Farmers Market in Chapel Hill. Any business that can get at least 5 subscribers in one location can also become a pickup location.
IMPORTANT: Please be aware that a CSA is not for everyone and that not all CSA's are alike. In order to handle the volume, we pack all of our CSA boxes the same which means you are not able to select what goes in your box and we only provide locally grown, in-season produce. If you are expecting summer type produce in your winter CSA box or if you want to choose the contents of your box each week, you will be disappointed and should not subscribe.
The winter produce CSA subscription fee of $360 is non-refundable and is due with your application. The number of winter CSA subscriptions is limited and allocated on a first-come, first -served basis. Payment along with your application is required to secure your subscription.
