Thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of year at the farm. We are one of the few local farms that raise heritage breed turkeys outside on pasture and the week before Thanksgiving we get over 100 calls from folks desperately searching for one of these hard to find birds. Online they sell for as much as $16.00/lb plus a $50+ shipping fee. This year we are accepting pre-orders for our turkeys at a pre-order special price of $8.00/lb for frozen or $9.00/lb for fresh. Reserving now means you are assured of getting a bird and makes it easier on the farm since all the birds are pre-sold and we know where they are going in advance.

Today we picked over 1000 pounds of tomatoes. That makes this week and/or maybe next the peak of the tomato season. For every 5 tomatoes we pick, at least one is deemed not good enough to be a slicing/eating tomato and those go into our Scratch and Dent boxes for making sauce. This weekend we made over 70 pints of sauce for use on-farm. Nothing is better on a cold winter day than a dish made with home-canned heirloom sauce. We’ll make about 300 pints before the season is finished, but we can’t eat them all so now’s your chance to preserve some summer goodness for this fall and winter. Piedmont Farm Tour this weekend Wed, April 23, 2014
This weekend is the CFSA Farm Tour and we are thrilled to be a featured farm on the tour again this year. Here’s how it works. You buy one ticket per car and you can see any of 39 farms over the 2 day period. Each farm is different. At Coon Rock Farm you will get a farmer guided tour of the gardens as well as see baby chicks, baby ducks, baby lambs and on Saturday afternoon we will also be shearing our flock of Tunis sheep for all to see. In addition to the tour, we’ll have brats on the grill and ice cream from Homeland Creamery and our sister company Bella Bean Organics will be set up with lots of local artisan goods for sale and our on-farm market for produce and meat will be open during the tour. Richard Holcomb loved growing up around his family’s feeder pig farm in Whiteville, N.C. — so much so that he considered going into farming himself. When his family moved to Conway, S.C., he worked on local farms as hired help.
But when Holcomb graduated from high school in 1979, he says the conventional wisdom in farming was “get big or get out.”
“I got out,” he says.
He studied computer science at the University of South Carolina for three years and and then started his master’s in the same field at NC State in 1983. A year later, he left State to work in the software industry for more than two decades, founding and investing in more than 30 local software companies. Along the way, he returned to State and completed his master’s degree in in 1989.
